S2 students at Portlethen Academy secured £3000 for Aberdeen Cyrenians through the Youth and Philanthropy Initiative (YPI).
Arran Cameron, Owen Chalmers, Fynn Matthew, Calley Muir, and Sophia Le Tissier (R-L) presented a creative and compelling case for the funds to judges which included Yasmin McCulloch of local funding partner bp, and the school’s Head Teacher Barry Drennan.
Their presentation focused on raising awareness of homelessness in Aberdeen City and Shire and the skills they have developed through YPI.
bp has supported The Wood Foundation’s YPI programme in the North-east for four years, granting £95,000 for young people to channel to local charities. Judge Yasmin McCulloch said:
“The YPI Final Showcase was a fantastic opportunity for young people to showcase their commitment to social issues within their community. bp is delighted to support YPI across Aberdeenshire.”
Other charities represented at the school’s live final held in its auditorium included Alzheimer’s Scotland, The Living Well Project, Instant Neighbour, North East Eating Disorders Support Scotland, and Four Pillars.
Head Teacher Barry Drennan added:
“I’m super proud of all of the S2 students for their enthusiasm, commitment, and genuine interest in making a difference in their community. YPI is something that we’re extremely passionate about and we already can’t wait to deliver it next year. Thank you to the wonderful team who deliver YPI.”
Arran Cameron was part of the winning team. He said:
“We really enjoyed doing YPI and have gained so many skills that we can take into the world of work.”
YPI is an active citizenship programme which has been responsible for more than £5m being granted to social services charity in Scotland by 230,000 empowered young people. Through teamwork, research, and competition, young people develop skills while they advocate on behalf of their communities. One team from each of the 250 participating schools will secure a £3000 grant on behalf of their chosen charity.
