The Youth and Philanthropy Initiative (YPI) is a powerful active citizenship programme empowering young people to make a difference in their communities.

YPI engages a full year group of students, developing skills and confidence through a contextualised learning experience.  Through teamwork, research, and competition, young people advocate for social issues in a bid to secure a £3000 grant for their chosen charity.

Becoming a School Partner

YPI encourages and supports schools to connect with their local communities and build partnerships during the YPI process. Engagement with schools as a partner can take many forms – from mentoring students, judging final presentations to funding the school’s contribution to the grant, or even longer term opportunities to work together to meet shared aims.

Partners can enhance the YPI experience for young people by increasing the knowledge, experience and skills gained through the process, and this benefit is two-way. Partners have reported that they benefit from engaging with local young people and their communities, supporting charities and enhancing the skills and experiences of their employees.  A school might get directly in touch with you, or if you are interested in connecting with a school, let us know.

Becoming a YPI Partner

The Wood Foundation is committed to working with like-minded organisations, to collaborate meaningfully with funders, nuture relationships with local authorities, and strengthen school and sector partnerships.  Our aim is to create and enable inspiring partnerships to maximise the impact and legacy of YPI. If you are interested to find out more and explore potential opportunities, get in touch.

Mentoring Students

Through mentoring, partners can support the YPI process by sharing their knowledge and experience with young people (and teachers!). Our mentoring resources share more on what this could look like, but it could be delivering a presentation skills or pitching workshop, watching presentations and providing feedback, or simply supporting young people in class along the way. If this is something of interest, get in touch with the Programme Manager and we can connect you with a school.

Judge a YPI Final

Partners could sit on the YPI judging panel, seeing firsthand the culmination of YPI in school and offering an objective perspective as part of the judging process. Schools will often reach out in search of their judges. If you are keen to support get in touch with the Programme Manager and we can connect you with a school.

Support Schools Participation Costs

Partners could consider supporting the school in a monetary way, providing a full or match funded contribution towards the £500 school partnership funding amount, or sharing a donation for runner up prizes for those groups who have worked incredibly hard but aren’t the ultimate winners. This means that all finalist charities receive something beyond the important awareness raising achieved. This may be complimented by students’ own fundraising efforts where they have chosen or been able to do so.
