YPI launch: SHARP conference revived thanks to young people at Perth Grammar School

Perth Grammar School young people win £3,000 YPI grant for SHARP

Perth Grammar School hosted a remarkable YPI launch, demonstrating the power of community connections and student advocacy.

A highlight of the event was the involvement of previous YPI winners and a representative from SHARP (Scottish Heart & Arterial disease Risk Prevention), the charity that benefited from the £3,000 grant in the previous year.

They shared how the funding had directly supported their work, inspiring the current cohort of students to see the tangible difference they could make in their local community.

SHARP had traditionally hosted an annual conference to update medical practitioners on advancements in cardiovascular and metabolic treatment. However, due to the challenges of Covid-19 and funding constraints, the conference had been suspended.

When Lily and Rose from Perth Grammar School approached SHARP during their YPI journey, the charity was at a crossroads, debating the feasibility of reviving the event. The £3,000 secured by the students made it possible to relaunch the conference, which took place in November.

As part of this renewed effort, SHARP included a CPR workshop specifically tailored for Lily and Rose, showcasing their commitment to engaging young people in community health education.

SHARP’s representative described being “truly inspired” by the students’ dedication and passion, emphasising the importance of empowering young people to drive meaningful change.

The 2024 SHARP Annual Meeting focused on the vital interface between primary and secondary care in managing cardiovascular and metabolic conditions.

This case study exemplifies the ripple effect of YPI – how one act of advocacy and funding can empower charities to continue their essential work while inspiring young people to become catalysts for change.

The Gannochy Trust – which was founded in 1937 by Scottish businessman and philanthropist Arthur Kinmond Bell, known as A.K. Bell – is a Community Partner of YPI in Perth & Kinross.

The Gannochy Trust’s spokesperson said: “Supporting YPI means empowering young people to improve lives and strengthen their communities – values we hold close to our heart. Seeing Lily and Rose work with SHARP to revive a vital conference demonstrates the true impact of YPI. It is a testament to what can be achieved when young people are given the tools to make a difference.”
